section by section, the obvious

response to this impossible fall.

Safety. Retaliation. Security.

Counterattack. Anthrax. Rubble.

Headlines buzz horror. Though

the odd letter to the editor suggests

we're not at war with terrorism

or the Taliban, but with shadows,

or mosquitoes. Or ourselves.

Yes, a dark season that will end

when we stop the fighting. If we can.
